Somewhere steady, non-flammable and of course somewhere youc an keep the kids away from. DO NOT use the Pig Bluey on decking or any other flammable surfaces such as dry grass, wood chips, leaves or decorative bark.

How do I cure my Pig Bluey BBQ before its first use?

  • To start a fire place rolled up newspaper with some lighter cubes or solid firelighters on the charcoal plate in the base of Pig Bluey. Then place 2 or 3 handfuls of lump charcoal over the top of the newspaper.
  • DO NOT use petrol, white spirit, lighter fluid, alcohol or other similar chemicals for lighting or relighting.
  • Open the bottom vent and light the newspaper using a long nosed lighter or safety matches.
  • DO NOT overload the unit with fuel – if the fire is too intense this could damage the Pig Bluey.
  • Leave until all the fuel is used and extinguished.
  • If the first burns are too high it could damage the felt gasket seal before it has had the chance to mature properly.
  • After first use inspect all fasteners for tightness. The metal band connecting your lid to the base will expand from the heat and this could become
  • loose. It is recommended you check and if necessary tighten the band with a spanner.

Do I need to maintain Pig Bluey?

Yes. But all you need to do is tighten the bands and oil the hinge 2 times a year or more if needed.

How do I clean and maintain my Pig Bluey BBQ?

The great news, is that your Snaffling Pig Bluey BBQ does not need cleaning very often.

PIGGIN' IMPORTANT:

  • Fire it up as normal and get it to 300˚C. Let it burn for a good 15-20 minutes and it'll clean itself like a self-cleaning oven. We call this a 'mother earth clean'.
  • DO NOT use water or any other types of cleaning product to clean the inside of your Pig Bluey. The walls are porous and will absorb any fluids used, this could cause Pig Bluey to crack. If the soot becomes excessive then use a wire brush or the ash tool (not supplied) to scrape off the carbon remnants before the next use.
  • To clean the grills and grates use a non-abrasive cleaner once the unit has fully cooled.
  • To clean the outer surface wait until Pig Bluey is cool and use a damp cloth with a mild detergent.

And that's it. Less time cleaning, more time grilling.

The top of my Pig Bluey BBQ (vent) is quite loose, is this normal?

Yes, this is meant to be loose so you can open and close the vent to control temperature.

There is some smoke escaping even though the BBQ is shut, is this normal?

Yes this is normal, the ceramic is drilled into to create holes for the temperature gauge & emblem, however these are not airtight.

How do I keep the Pig Bluey BBQ on a low temperature?

  • Light the lump charcoal according to the instructions above. DO NOT move or stoke the coals once lit.
  • Open the bottom vent fully and leave the lid open for about 10 minutes to build a small bed of hot embers.
  • Monitor Pig Bluey until it has risen to the desired temperature. See page 4 for a temperature cooking guide.
  • Fully close the bottom vent to maintain the temperature.
  • You are now ready to use Pig Bluey for cooking on.
  • IMPORTANT: When opening the lid at high temperatures it is essential to lift the lid only slightly, allowing air to enter slowly and safely, preventing any backdraft or flare-ups that may cause injury.
  • ALWAYS use heat resistant gloves when handling hot ceramics or cooking surfaces.

How do I use the Pig Bluey on a high temperature?

  • ALWAYS use heat resistant gloves when handling hot ceramics or cooking surfaces.

How do I control the temperature in my Pig Bluey BBQ?

Take your mind back to physics.

Fire = Heat + Oxygen + Fuel.

More oxygen means more heat. So opening the valves on the top and bottom of the Pig Bluey will make it hotter. Closing them, makes it cooler. Shutting them completely stops oxygen and gives the flames dead. Keep your valves in sync — if your chimney is open 1cm, your door should be too.

Using a Pig Bluey is something not to be rushed. It's to be enjoyed. Load and light your Bluey with both vents fully open. Once you've reached your target temperature, you can begin to adjust vents and you'll notice the Bluey will respond to even the smallest changes.

The Pig Bluey is designed to get hot and stay hot, its not designed to cool down. So if you over shoot your chosen temperature, close the vents slowly and give your Bluey time to respond. You will find that it takes a little longer, but stay with it, grab a beer and enjoy the view.

How do I use Pig Bluey for grilling?

Light your Pig Bluey by following the instructions in the piggin' FAQ above, "HOW DO I LIGHT MY PIG BLUEY?". Once it's warmed up and you are close to your target temperature you're ready to go. It's incredibly easy.

How do I use my Pig Bluey BBQ for roasting?

Light your Pig Bluey by following the instructions in the piggin' FAQ above, "HOW DO I LIGHT MY PIG BLUEY? Once it's warmed up and you are close to your target temperature, pop in your Heat Deflector, legs up, place the Stainless Steel Grid on top and close the lid. The temperature will drop but don't worry, it will come back up. When you are 10˚C from your target temperature again, adjust your vents by 0.5cm increments. Hit your temperature, leave it for 10 minutes and you'll be ready for a piggin' roast.

How do I use the Pig Bluey to smoke meats?

  • Monitor Pig Bluey until it has risen to the desired temperature. See page 4 for a temperature cooking guide.
  • Leave the bottom vent slightly open.
  • Close the top vent and continue to check the temperature for a few more minutes.
  • Using heat resistant gloves sprinkle the wood chips in a circle over the hot charcoal.
  • You are now ready to use Pig Bluey to smoke on.
  • TIP: Soak your wood chips or cooking planks in water for 15 minutes to prolong the smoking process.

How hot does Pig Bluey get and how long does it take to cook my food?

Below is a a piggin' guide for cooking temperatures. This is included with your instructions. Pig Bluey is not designed to exceed the maximum temperatures stated below and we would not recommend trying to do so for safety reasons and to keep your Pig Bluey in mighty swine working order.

Snaffling Pig Mini Pig Bluey BBQ cooking times and temperatures

What is the maximum heat resistance of the Snaffling Pig BBQ protective mitts?

Always BBQ with piggin' caution. We have had the gloves laboratory-tested and they withstand heat of up to 250*C for up to 15 seconds. Do not attempt to go anywhere near those limits. Please use Pig Bluey BBQ sensibly and responsibly.

My Pig Bluey BBQ thermometer is not working. What can I do?

Once in a bluey moon (and we're talking maybe one in every 500 BBQs), the temperature gauge on the top of Pig Bluey might tell porkies. That is, the needle on the thermometer does not move, or it has got stuck. If this is the case with yours, drop us a line on hungry@snafflingpig.co.uk and we'll send you a replacement thermometer, which can easily be fitted to your Pig Bluey without any faff. We'll guide you through the steps to make the magic happen. We'd ask that you get in touch to inform us of this fault within 30 days of purchase please.

Can I return my Pig Bluey BBQ if I change my mind?

If you decide to return your Pig Bluey BBQ within 14 days of receipt, we will refund the full value that you paid at the time of your transaction, provided the BBQ is unused, in a re-saleable condition and in its original packaging. A 10% re-stocking fee will be deducted from your final refund. Please contact us at hungry@snafflingpig.co.uk to arrange collection.

You will be liable for the shipping fee, which is usually around £50 (some locations have shipping surcharges, and if the strapping has been removed from the pallet there will be an additional re-strapping fee). Please contact us for a quote for return.

The Pig Bluey BBQ must be returned to us in a perfect, re-saleable condition and in its original packaging. If it is not in the same condition as when it was delivered to you, we may refuse the return. We will get in touch to talk this through.

What happens if my Pig Bluey BBQ is damaged when I receive it?

If you believe your product to be defective, or that you are entitled to a replacement under warranty, please let us know by emailing hungry@snafflingpig.co.uk, with some photos showing the problem and a short description telling us what is wrong. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Please don’t return the item to us until we have confirmed the next steps, which may include sending replacement parts and instructions on how to repair it.

What happens if my returned Pig Bluey BBQ arrives at Snaffling Pig having been damaged in transit?

If you have arranged the return via our chosen courier, you will still receive your refund, less the 10% re-stocking fee.

If you’ve used your own choice of courier, we will notify you as soon as possible to inform you of the damage. We can accept no responsibility for any items that do not arrive in a re-saleable condition, so a refund will not be issued.

There are some hairline cracks in the glazing of my Pig Bluey - should I be concerned?

“Crazing” is common among all kamado BBQs, and in fact most ceramic products, including ours from time to time. It's caused by the different rates at which the ceramic & glazed elements cool during the manufacturing process of the Kamado BBQ and nothing to be worried about.
